Indications for NEAK-funded PET-CT scans

The purpose of oncology PET-CT scans:

  • Early detection of cancer
  • Differentiating benign from malignant tumours
  • Examination of the extent of cancer, detection of metastases (staging)
  • Assessment of the efficacy of therapy, evaluation of residual lesions
  • Reassessment of staging
  • PET-CT based radiotherapy planning
  • Finding the primary process in case of known metastases
  • Determination of biopsy site

How is a referral for a PET-CT scan made?

There are two ways to make a referral, if you are a private patient please see below.

The referral procedure for NEAK-funded examinations:

  • The treating physician who has indicated the examination registers in the PET Central Waiting List System (https://petct.neak.gov.hu) managed by NEAK and initiates the examination request electronically.
  • On the Waiting List, the request will be assessed (simplified, professional subcommittee, central committee) depending on the indication and the indicating physician will be notified. The process is controlled and a decision is taken within 72 hours.
  • Patients on the Central Waiting List are automatically allocated by a programme to the NEAK-funded PET-CT centres in the country. The program takes into account the referring doctor’s preference (which centre he/she requested the test at), the NEAK quota and internal waiting list length of each centre, the location of any previous tests and the patient’s place of residence.

  • If you request a PET-CT scan at one of our PET-CT centres, our dispatching service will contact you immediately to arrange an appointment. The patient will be informed of the appointment by letter or telephone.
